Each year, around 24 million Canadians volunteer their time to organizations like yours, amounting to approximately 2.5 billion hours. Most of these hours are gifted by individuals who donate them through non-profit organizations like yours.

A police check for volunteers is appropriate any time a volunteer will be working with the public or entrusted with money, property, or personal information (depending on the volunteer work they are doing).

Obtaining a police check for volunteers can be confusing, and it’s sometimes difficult to tell which type of police check you need.

Most volunteer organizations rely on a type of police check for volunteers called a CRJMC (Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check). This criminal record check will reveal convictions, outstanding charges, warrants, and more. A CRMJC should be sufficient to meet your needs.

That said, if a volunteer will be working alone with children, seniors, or people with disabilities (vulnerable people), you may go a step further than a basic police check for volunteers.

A VSC (Vulnerable Sector Check) is a check that goes beyond a CRJMC and also provides information on criminal offenses where the individual was charged but found “not criminally responsible” on account of mental disorder, a conviction that has been pardoned, and more.

Sending your volunteers to obtain a VSC can really extend the time it takes to get them working with you because the VSC can take two weeks or longer to arrive in the mail. A VSC must be obtained at the police station, after which the individual has to wait for it to arrive in the mail.

Volunteer organizations often prefer CRJMC because it can be quickly obtained online, greatly expediting the onboarding of volunteers.
