COVID-19 has impacted the workplace in a number of ways in 2020.

Who knew at the start of last year, that we would be juggling ten things while working from home or gloves or masks would be our daily essential when going to the office?

Humi, an HR, payroll, and benefits platform, has shared an in-depth analysis of the effect the pandemic has had on the Canadian workplaces.

Some of the key findings shared in the report include:

Time Off

As expected, there has been a steep decline in time-off requests. About 40% fewer requests for holidays were placed in summer 2020, as compared to summer 2019.

While the main reason for reduced holiday applications seems to be the travel restrictions, there may be other factors at play too. These include:

-Worries about job security,

-Increased workload due to layoffs in the workplace,

-Or both.

Women in the Workplace

Another insightful yet not completely unexpected finding is that we still have to do a lot of work when it comes to gender diversity at work.

In 2020, there were only 21% of women in C-suite positions.

Having women in leadership positions is vital because that leads to a ripple effect. For instance, the data from the report shows that when there was at least one woman on the C-suite team, there were about 8% more women on the team.

Digitalization of HR

It is no secret that when digital resources are not leveraged many HR processes are negatively impacted.

For instance, employee onboarding may not be smooth and leave the new employees with a ton of questions. This can lead to problems if the employee leaves or isn’t able to be productive.

Digitalization can result in a number of benefits such as automating administrative tasks, making the recruitment process faster and more efficient, getting measurable results for HR campaigns, and enhancing data security.

Salaries

One key finding shared in the report is that the average Canadian salary dropped 4.5% during the COVID-19 pandemic, from $61,212 in January to $58,428 in July.

This could be due to a number of reasons such as:

-Employees taking a pay cut,

-High-paying employees being laid off,

-Or employers reducing salary scales due to budget limitations.
